The UNFPA (United Nation’s Fund for Population Activities) has reported that of Uganda's 34.5 million peopple, 23.1 million are prone to poverty. Of these around 8.4 million (about 24.5%) are trapped in absolute poverty.
Many families lack basic needs such as clean water. This results in the rapid spread of water borne diseases like Cholera. Food shortages also lead to malnutrition, disease and death. Children are the most affected.
Children can also suffer because they are vulnerable to abuse in their own homes. One form of abuse is child marriages which are estimated to number over 46% for those under 18 with 12-13 being the average age in certain villages.
Some parents send their children into the towns and cities with the false hope of a better life. But many of these children are no better off with about 10,000 street children in Uganda being forced to beg for survival. They are vulnerable child trafficking and a life in the sex or drug trade, or both.
HIV is a virus that can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). In 2018 there were 1.4 million people in Uganda living with AIDS and 53,000 HIV related deaths. Causes are lifestyle, lack of education and poor access to medicine. Women and young women are most affected.
